Because the oceans are essential to life on Earth.
The ocean is the largest ecosystem on Earth, it is the planet’s life support system. Oceans generate half of the oxygen we breathe and, at any given moment, they contain more than 97% of the world’s water. Living oceans absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and reduce climate change impacts.
The diversity and productivity of the world’s oceans is a vital interest for humankind. The battle to save our most diverse ecosystems is entering a critical phase.
Our marine habitats find themselves on the frontlines of the planet's greatest conflict -- one that threatens countless species and the health of future generations -- the fight to avert a climate crisis.

WHY
PROTECT
THE CORALS?

The world has lost over half of its coral reefs in the past 30 years due to climate change, overfishing, and pollution.
Coral bleaching, which is caused by warmer ocean temperatures, now ‘five times more frequent’ than 40 years ago. The scale of bleaching has been rising steadily in the last four decades, a study author tells Carbon Brief, with the global proportion of coral being hit by bleaching per year rising from 8% in the 1980s to 31% in 2016.
By 2050, nearly all the world's reefs will be at risk, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Because you and the future of all those you love depends on healthy oceans. We want a better future for our oceans and the people that depend on them.
THE DYNAMIC
Add your CO2 REDUCTION COMMITMENT

We offer participants a Commitment to implement in their day to day and reduce at least 1 ton of emissions per year. With our 10 eco-ethical changes they will reduce their environmental impact in the oceans switching a gray mark (pollution) into a BLUE MARK.
Be part of the 1 Million CO2 Reduction Challenge
Leave your BLUE MARK of awareness to protect our Oceans

The participants use one of their thumbs, painted with blue ink, to leave a physical mark on the art piece "Leave your BLUE MARK for the oceans" and on a participation certificate. Both with a unique PIN number that allows them to identify their unique BLUE MARK in the finished artwork and on-line in our website.
Change the World with Art

“Your BLUE MARK becomes an international masterpiece that assembles all those who leave a mark to contributes with their unique gift -their Individuality- to create a better world.”
Participatory Artwork

Each co-author participant gives an email and takes a picture with the blue thumb, for the artistic documentation of the commitment to "Leave a BLUE MARK for the oceans" by AB 2020 the world's largest participatory artwork.
Blue Marks became Corals
Each BLUE MARK in the participatory artwork "LEAVE YOUR BLUE MARK FOR THE OCEANS by AB" is represented by a unique coral with the same PIN number. Small specimens of coral are collected from a healthy “donor coral” under our experts' supervision. After collection, the samples are placed on the art installation "BLUE MARK LABYRINTH by AB" to let them grow.
Interactive Art Installation
The "BLUE MARK LABYRINTH by AB" is an underwater art installation used to grow corals. This interactive art installation will house around the small pieces of corals, creating a unique marine labyrinth involving the spectator so everyone can enjoy diving.
Corals Growing in an Art Installation
During their time in our art installation corals are carefully maintained by regular cleaning and removal of invasive species. Our main goal is to improve genetic diversity and increase numbers of corals, while also creating blue-green jobs in an artwork.
New Reef with Ecological Art
"BLUE MARK REEF ART PARK by AB" create homes for sea life as artificial reefs. From tourism to marine recreation, "BLUE MARK REEF ART PARKS" play an important role in local economies. They’re also essential to the health of the ocean, providing habitat for a variety of marine life and increasing coastal resilience to storms. Additionally "BLUE MARK REEF ART PARK by AB" provides an opportunity to educate by creating awareness and encourage commitment to protect the oceans making it a top diving destination.

Ecological Coral Art Park
After 9 months to 1 year, when the samples reach the desired size they are removed from the "BLUE MARK LABYRINTH by AB" and are attached to the "BLUE MARK REEF ART PARK by AB" by our experts.
The new reef will be constituted with different species forming a print that will become a park to be visited by the public. Everyone can follow the growth of their coral by using coordinates of Google Maps, Photos, Videos, and visit the BLUE MARK REEF ART PARK.
Art Book Documentation
The complete initiative will be documented with photographs that will become part of the Artbook, (huge limited edition book and the coffee-table book “Leave your BLUE MARK of awareness to protect our Oceans By Analia Bordenave”
All those who left their Blue Mark will want to have this book.

BLUE MARK for the Oceans

A.B. and AFE's Team are working with local partners to build artificial reefs to support thriving coastlines and ocean ecosystems, -- creating more "BLUE MARK REEF ART PARKS" as a refuge for marine life and a living legacy for future generations.

BLUE MARK REEF ART PARKS will provide spawning, nursery, refuge and feeding areas for a large variety of organisms, including sponges, cnidarians, worms, crustaceans (including shrimp, spiny lobsters, and crabs), mollusks (including cephalopods), echinoderms (including starfish, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers), sea squirts, sea turtles and sea snakes.
Reef structures play an important role as natural breakwaters, which minimize wave impacts from storms such as cyclones, hurricanes or typhoons. Other benefits include:
-
Habitat: Home to over 1 million diverse aquatic species, including thousands of fish species.
-
Income: Coral reefs and related ecosystems have a global estimated value of ‘$2.7 trillion per year, or 2.2% of all global ecosystem service values’, this includes tourism and food.
-
Coastal protection: coral reefs reduce shoreline erosion by absorbing energy from the waves: they can protect coastal housing, agricultural land, and beaches. The global net benefit of coastal protection by reefs is an estimated $9 billion per year.
-
Medicine: Reefs are home to species that contain pharmaceutical compounds that have the potential for treatments for some of the world’s most prevalent and dangerous illnesses and diseases.
