Lad Akins
Blue Mark Coral Parks and Coral Restoration Advisor
Lad was the founding Executive Director of the Reef Environmental Education Foundation, based in Key Largo, Florida, and worked there for 28 years. He is currently the Dive Safety Officer and research vessel Captain at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science and the Director of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Foundation.
He has served as a US Delegate on the Bi-National Commission on Marine Protected Areas with South Africa, solo piloted Deepworker submersibles to assess fish assemblages at depths over 500’, saturated for 8 days as an aquanaut in the Aquarius Research Station and discovered and described new species of fish. As a US Coast Guard licensed Captain and a dive instructor with over 12,000 dives, Lad has been recognized as NOAA Environmental Hero, an Oris Sea Hero, Scuba Diving Hero of the Sea and has recently been inducted into the industry’s Scuba Diving Hall of Fame.
Lad’s current focus on invasive lionfish includes serving on numerous federal and international panels and working groups, working with major media, and co-authoring over 20 peer-reviewed papers on the issue. Lad has been diving for 37 years and we are proud to have his experience focused on developing our program to protect our oceans.

Step1: defined the carbon footprint reduction goals and scope that the event could generate taking into account items like transport, waste produced, type of energy used, feeding, etc.
Step 2: defined actions and follow-up processes that have to be undertaken to reach the goals specified in step 1.
Step 3: during the execution of the event control the actions execution to comply with Green Meeting sustainable criteria.
Step 4: The environmental impact reduction is calculated, the results are communicated and a strategy to reach better goals while the next event is established.
Step 5: Purchase of the necessary Green Marks to neutralize the event environmental impact. The participation in the Eco Art Work is planned, and the Green Marks become trees.
Step 6: Finally you receive a Certificate attesting the Carbon Footprint neutralization for your emissions.
Step 7: our team will assure, during the follow-up, that all the projects are carefully monitored within and after their execution. It will be possible to follow the plants and trees growing in real time through our exclusive TIMELINE with pictures, videos, and the Google Maps coordinates.

The human race is facing a climate emergency that is outpacing our efforts to address it. The global emissions rate jumped last year. At current rates, global warming is likely to reach at least 1.5 degrees Celsius between 2030 and 2052, leading to significant risks to health, livelihoods, food security, water supply, human security, and economic growth. Without rapid and all-encompassing transitions, these impacts will be even worse.
​
Without concerted action, it could drive 100 million more people into poverty by 2030. Warming is expected to decrease crop yields in many areas, exacerbating food insecurity, undernutrition, and stunting in poor communities.
​
The world is also facing dire challenges in addressing biodiversity and environmental protection. Human actions have already significantly altered three-quarters of land and two-thirds of marine environments.
Today, around 1 million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction, which is the highest number in human history. While deforestation has slowed, it still continues around the world, and land degradation and desertification have increased. In most regions, water quality has significantly worsened since 1990 due to organic and chemical pollution, and more than 75 percent of freshwater resources are now devoted to crops or livestock production.
